Watering will be key to establishing your new sod. General guidelines during establishment are to water 1/2″ to 3/4″ daily for the first four weeks and then every other day for the next four weeks. Then get on your regular watering schedule. Example: 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on your water pressure. If your schedule allows, watering your lawn in the morning or late evening is ideal. Watering your lawn in the afternoon during the warmest part of the day can cause the water to evaporate rather than be absorbed.
Water your new sod every day. Make sure the water soaks deep into the soil – it should be wet several inches down.
After about a week, gently try to lift a corner of the sod. If you feel some resistance and see new roots, that's great!
Don't let your new sod dry out! Watch for signs of wilting or brown patches, and adjust your watering if needed. Take care never to overwater the sod while it is in the rooting stage. Soggy sod can lead to root rot and eventually new sod failure. Instead, water the sod in smaller amounts, several times during the day. When caring for new sod, the rooting period is the most critical.
The sod is more susceptible to insect, fungus, and disease damage if it gets too much water. Once you spot the signs of excessive watering, skip one or two watering sessions so the sod and soil underneath are only moist. not soggy.
It typically takes two weeks for new sod to root securely enough to withstand walking.
After the two-week mark, you can test your sod and see if it's ready to be mowed! To do this, gently tug on the sod. If it feels anchored to the ground, then the roots have established themselves in the soil and you can go ahead with mowing.
